Space Bunny in OpenCode

OpenCode was the first coding agent to hand out Space Bunny for free. Here is how to set it up in five minutes, and how it compares with the other OpenCode free models.

Why OpenCode and Space Bunny Go Together

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent that runs in your terminal, desktop or IDE. On September 23, 2026 it became the first agent to promote Space Bunny free for a week through OpenCode Zen, its curated model service. That launch is a big reason Space Bunny spread so fast. The OpenCode announcement ("1M context, multimodal, zero data retention") was shared across X, LinkedIn and Facebook within hours.

The pairing makes sense. OpenCode handles the agent loop, file edits, LSP diagnostics and shell commands, while Space Bunny supplies a fast model with a context window big enough to read most of a repository. For a free setup, it is hard to beat, as long as the preview lasts. Users on r/opencode report the Space Bunny free period in OpenCode now runs until October 5.

Set Up Space Bunny in OpenCode (5 Minutes)

1. Install OpenCode

Use npm with npm i -g opencode-ai, or the install script from opencode.ai. Homebrew and desktop builds are also available.

2. Sign in to OpenCode Zen

Run opencode in a project folder, then use /connect and choose OpenCode Zen. Create a free account and paste the API key. No payment is needed for Space Bunny.

3. Select Space Bunny

Type /models and pick Space Bunny Free. To make Space Bunny your default in every OpenCode session, add it to opencode.json in the project or your global config:

4. Give it a real task

Start with something that uses the long context, such as "read this repo and list every unimplemented stub," which was one Reddit user's favorite Space Bunny task. Use OpenCode's plan mode first for bigger changes, then switch to build mode once the plan looks right.

Using Space Bunny in OpenCode Through OpenRouter

If you already have an OpenRouter key, OpenCode can use the OpenRouter route instead of Zen. Run /connect, choose OpenRouter, paste your key, then set the model:

The model is the same. The difference is which free limits apply. Zen limits are set by OpenCode, and OpenRouter limits follow OpenRouter's free-model rules. Some people keep both connected so they can switch when one route is busy.

For whole-repo work, Space Bunny's 1M window is the clear standout. For quick edits, several OpenCode users prefer MiMo-V2.6-Flash or DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, which they find more predictable. The best approach is to keep Space Bunny as your long-context model and switch with /models when a task is small.

OpenCode Go and Omen Alpha

OpenCode also sells OpenCode Go, a $10 per month plan with dollar-based limits ($12 per 5 hours, $30 per week, $60 per month) across about 30 open models, including MiniMax M3, GLM-5.3, Kimi K3, Qwen3.8 and DeepSeek V4. You do not need Go for Space Bunny, but if Space Bunny turns out to be MiniMax and loses its free status, MiniMax M3 on Go is the closest paid replacement inside OpenCode.

Go subscribers currently also get Omen Alpha, a different stealth model with a separate usage allowance, which the community links to the GLM family. OpenCode is running two anonymous previews at once, so check which one you picked in /models.

Tips for Space Bunny in OpenCode

Set effort per task. Use low for renames and small fixes and high for refactors. Max effort on a one-line change can think for a minute.
Watch for language drift. Add "Always respond in English" to your AGENTS.md if Space Bunny slips into Chinese.
Commit often. One user found Space Bunny signing commits as Claude. Check git log author lines before you push.
Use private repos carefully. Retention terms are unclear, so keep client code out of the free Space Bunny route.
Plan for October 5. Set a fallback model in your OpenCode config now so your workflow keeps running when the free window closes.
